An attempt to remap Europe and claim back the lost territories of the North Sea

Hooksiel
Since the beginning of April, we’ve been staying in Wilhelmshaven, near the harbour. Last Wednesday, as sun was forecast at about the time of high tide, we took an afternoon off and went to the nearest beach at Hooksiel.

Egmond aan Zee
As it was pleasant weather on the Sunday, we took the car north to the resort village Egmond aan Zee. Clouds had formed by the time we arrived, but there were still some brief sunny spells as we crossed the dunes to the beach.

New land
On the Saturday, we travelled north to Lelystad, the namesake town of Cornelis Lely. Lely is known for his plan to enclose and partly drain the Zuiderzee (the former “south sea”), creating the province of Flevoland, of which Lelystad is the capital.

Future land
Despite the unsettled weather, we set out in the early afternoon toward Rotterdam. We took an indirect route, as I wanted to travel over the Zuidplaspolder, said to be the lowest point in the Netherlands.
